Fredrick Douglass Jones (1923-2002), longtime friend
of VisionQuest, served in the 28th Cavalry, the
last horseback unit formed by the Army.
The 28th was created with a cadre from the
10th Cavalry Regiment -- the original
Buffalo Soldiers. As a carrier of this proud
legacy, Fred subsequently inspired countless
young people by sharing the trials and triumphs
of these heroic men of color.

Living History

Young people learn “how to be” from role models and culturally-relevant heroes. But many youth from minority backgrounds lack a sense of pride in their heritage, and know few true heroes who share their cultural roots.

VisionQuest programs incorporate education and experiences to honor ethno-cultural heritage and history, increasing young people’s pride in their cultural roots. We teach young people about the proud tradition of the African American Buffalo Soldiers and Mexican American Vaqueros in American history. In the classroom, students learn about how these groups persevered in the face of discrimination and other challenges in order to achieve great things. Historic reenactments allow young people to experience the courage, determination and pride of their ancestors.
