Equine Assisted Therapy The experience of working with horses and other large animals is a powerful modality for teaching young people about relational skills, trust, the ability to care for and be supported by others, and control without using force. For many youth, this is also a very important modality for exploring and healing prior histories involving trauma. Using an innovative approach called “Round Pen Guided Centering,” young people learn important life lessons through the experience of natural horse training. Skilled wranglers teach youth how to communicate successfully with the horse and gain control through respect and leadership rather than power and force. In group and individual sessions, young people are assisted in seeing
the connection of this experiential learning to other relationships and
experiences in their lives.
