Claire Burton is the Secretary of the Board of Directors for VisionQuest National Ltd. She worked for VisionQuest from 1975 to 2008 and has remained active, assisting with various aspects of VisionQuest program development, human resources, quality of care, documentation, proposal preparation and program evaluation.
Before VisionQuest. Ms. Burton served as a Correctional Service Officer at the Arizona School for Girls and the Adobe Mountain School Divisions of the Arizona Department of Corrections. She received a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Peter Greenwood, Ph.D. is the President and CEO of Greenwood & Associates and Executive Director of the Association for Advancement of Evidence Based Practice. For many years he directed the RAND Corporation’s Criminal Justice Research Program. He has published widely in the areas of violence prevention, juvenile justice, criminal careers, sentencing, corrections and law enforcement policy. He and several RAND colleagues pioneered the use of cost - benefit studies to measure the effectiveness of alternative violence prevention strategies. His most recent book about violence prevention, Changing Lives: Delinquency Prevention as Crime-Control Policy was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2006.
Dr. Greenwood is a Fellow of the Academy of Experimental Criminology and has been recognized by the American Society of Criminology with the August Volmer Award, for his contributions to the field of criminal justice practice. He is also a past President and recipient of the Richard McGee award from the California Association of Criminal Justice Research and has served on the faculties of the University of California (Irvine), the University of Southern California, the RAND Graduate School, the Claremont Graduate School, and has served on the California Attorney General’s Panel on Research and Statistics.
He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.
Daniel Old Elk is a Sundance Chief for the Crow Tribe in Montana. He has been involved with VisionQuest since its inception. He was instrumental in helping VisionQuest borrow the right to use the Crow Sweat Lodge and other ceremonies with young people. He teaches VisionQuest staff about the proper use and meaning of ceremonies, and works with young people at VisionQuest programs across the country.
Over the years, Mr. Old Elk has been a guest on the popular children’s television program, Reading Rainbow. He has been interviewed for a number of television documentaries, explaining the culture of the Crow Tribe and the VisionQuest program. He also appeared in and was technical advisor for the motion picture, Jeremiah Johnson starring Robert Redford.
Old Elk has served as an elected official on the Tribal Council and held many positions both on the Crow Reservation and throughout Indian Country. He remains active in tribal and community affairs.
Ivan C.A. Walks, M.D. is CEO of Ivan Walks and Associates LLC, a consulting firm that specializes in the policy and practice of health, human services and education, with a focus on proactive health security and the opportunities and challenges of diverse communities. Dr. Walks also serves on the faculty at the public health schools of George Washington University and Howard University.
Dr. Walks was formerly the Chief Health Officer of the District of Columbia and the Director of the District’s Department of Health. In establishing health policy for the District, Dr. Walks developed proactive community partnerships, reduced infant mortality, insured immunization for all children attending schools, and served as incident commander during the 2001 anthrax attack.
Dr. Walks’ contributions to public health policy have been recognized by various state and national organizations and he is the recipient of the Leadership Washington Founder’s Award for Leadership and Community Service. He received his medical degree from the University of California, Davis and he is a graduate of the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA.
Peter Gravett is the President and CEO of Gravett & Associates, Inc., a global marketing firm. He is retired from the US Army and also the Los Angeles Police Department. In his dual careers he served over 20 years in law enforcement while simultaneously serving in the Army National Guard. Upon ending his LAPD career he returned to active duty where upon he retired with over 40 years total military service.
His law enforcement duties were varied including Internal Affairs and youth gang investigations. He served as a retired military commentator on the Iraqi War for KNBC, Channel 4 in Los Angeles and currently serves on various government commissions.
He holds a BS Degree in Criminology from California State University Long Beach, a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, a Diploma from the University of Virginia in Executive Law Enforcement as well as an Executive Diploma from Harvard University’s JFK School of Government in International Security. He is a graduate of the US Army War College and the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy where he authored Youth Gangs: An Urban Menace.
